Bookkeeping mistakes and solutions
Have you thought about your business bookkeeping or lack of it? Why are you putting it off? Is it too hard to learn the software or isn’t there enough time in the day?
Here’s a starting point for you. Are you keeping your receipts. You should and cancelled checks don’t count neither does the credit card receipt with just the amount you paid. Here at Watertight Bookkeeping we use Dext or HubDoc to keep all your receipts safe in the cloud. Remember the ink doesn’t always stay on the receipt so if you’re going to save them take a picture with your phone and save them in a folder.
Keeping your books current can stop your business from growing. During the year you notice your business is getting busier so you decide to hire another employee. Where’s your proof that your business won’t go under or you’ll still be able to pay off your vendors if you do hire someone? You need a professional bookkeeper who is held accountable for keeping your financial records up to date and explain your financial data to you.
Did you know that YOU are responsible to send 1099’s to your contractors? That’s right anyone paid over $600 you need to send the IRS and the contractor a 1099.
A benefit of having a professional bookkeeper like Watertight Bookkeeping is that giving an employee too much access and little supervision can create theft. The person making payments and deposits should not be the same person recording those transactions.
